There are many people in the world who don’t ask the question “Am I Happy?”
It feels as though depression has been on the rise for the last few years. Anti-depressants seem to be given out like candy. Experts seem to agree that while the treatment of depression by anti-depressants may sometimes control the symptoms, it usually does little to give sufferers depression-free lives.
All of this begs the question: Why aren’t people happy? According to the website, clinical-depression.co.uk, “Major depression is the number one psychological disorder in the western world. It is growing in all age groups in virtually every community and the growth is seen most in the young, especially teens. At the current rate of increase, it will be the second most disabling condition in the world by 2020 behind heart disease.
More than ever we need to look at alternatives to drugs that will equip us to deal effectively with the triggers that allow depression to take hold again and again. This is where drug treatments fail.” People hardly ever actually talk to each other anymore, and there is less and less human interaction. What has happened to “life liberty and the pursuit of happiness?”
Our film, The Happiness Chronicles proposes a 90-minute documentary that examines the philosophical underpinnings of each culture’s idea of happiness. We have set out to travel the world to many cultures and age groups to find out what has happened to our pursuit of happiness. The Happiness Chronicles will explore the lifestyles of happy and unhappy people to find out what makes the difference.
Why are some people consistently optimistic and happy while others are prone to chronic sadness and depression? We will explore the effects of religion, culture, age, and race as possible sources for a person’s view of happiness.
The Happiness Chronicles will document the compelling emotions involved in making the choice to be happy. We will discover how those who make the conscious choice to be happy lead more productive lives. We will also show how the stress of being unhappy takes its toll compared to the quality of life of those who have achieved happiness.
